After decorating golf carts with palm fronds, colorful beads and leis for a fun-filled day of golf where prizes were awarded in a Closest-to-the-Margarita Glass Putting Contest and best Key West-style dress, Treasure Coast Parrot Heads raised $4,000 on June 21 for the Florida Oceanographic Society on Hutchinson Island.
The Treasure Coast Parrot Head Club, a chapter of the international organization of Jimmy Buffett fan clubs, hosted its fourth annual golf tournament sponsored by Conchy Joe's at Gator Trace Golf & Country Club, Fort Pierce.
The event brought the club's two-year total donation of more than $9,200 for the Florida Oceanographc Society, which is devoted to protecting, preserving and restoring Florida's ocean and coastal ecosystems. The organization operates a coastal center on 56 acres between the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway, where children and adults explore nature trails, feed stingrays and learn about dozens of fish species living in a 750,000-gallon man-made salt-water lagoon.
"Treasure Coast Parrot Heads are fun-loving, community-minded people who are proud to support the unique environmental efforts of the Florida Oceanographic Society," Club President Joe Walker said. "We try to make our paradise a better place to live by supporting several worthwhile charities and environmental organizations - and we have a blast doing it."
The motto of the Parrot Head Clubs around the world is to "Party with a Purpose" and that's exactly what the Treasure Coast club had in mind when hosting the June 21 golf tournament.
The winning foursome included Steve Blanchett, Mike Strahowski, Don Schneider and Mike Crowther, all of Port St. Lucie. In second place were Paul Muczko, Mark Miele, Bradley Austwick and Tim Kavney, all of Port St. Lucie. The third place team included Tony Stevens and Jim Sadler, both of Delray Beach, and Tom Sadler and Jay Kugaraj, both of Stuart.

Kelvin Johnson of Port St. Lucie won the men's closest to the pin contest and Mike Miele of Port St. Lucie won a combined men's and women's closest to the pin contest.

Tom and Glenda Brannon of Palm City and Greg and Pat Moore of Jensen Beach won best golf cart decoration with their tiki hut designs named "Tiki Time Tour" - the name of a Buffett musical tour a few years ago.
The Treasure Coast Parrot Head Club has 136 members from Jupiter to Melbourne who enjoy the "island escapism" music and attitudes of singer/song-writer Jimmy Buffett and support a number of charitable causes throughout the year. In April, the club raised more than $6,800 for the American Cancer Society and won "Best Overall Team" for spirit, costumes, booth and collections during a Relay for Life event in Port St. Lucie.
Club members meet the first Wednesday of each month for Happy Hour at the Dolphin Bar and Shrimp House in Jensen Beach. For more information, visit
