Get your hot dogs (and more) at Dog House Grill
Contributed by: LogOn The Loggerhead on 3/29/2006

LogOn likes to come out of the shell and try international foods as often as possible, but sometimes I just want an old-fashioned American hot dog.

I recently had one of those cravings as I crawled around Jensen Beach Boulevard. Luckily, I spotted a restaurant that specializes in dogs.

I walked into the Dog House Grill around 1 p.m., late in the lunch hour. The relatively small restaurant was close to full with people sitting either at the counter or tables made for two or four. Old advertisements for Coke and other products and the sight of 1930s cartoon star Betty Boop serve as reminders of a simpler time.

As its sign says, Dog House Grill "ain't just dogs."

When I went, some of the daily specials were chicken portabella, shrimp in a basket and a coconut crusted tilapia. The regular lunch menu features salads, specialty sandwiches and hamburgers, including a Swiss cheese and mushroom burger called the Jensen burger.

But the restaurant is called the Dog House Grill with good reason. Customers can order hot dogs 16 different ways - with onions, with kraut, Texas style, Mexican style, Western style or with "a little of everything." The options cost as little as $2.85 for a plain dog and as much as $4.25 for the Big Dog House.

I ordered one of the quarter-pound dogs with the restaurant's homemade chili ($3.50). The menu says you get the "ultimate experience" if you get your dog deep-fried. I couldn't pass on the ultimate experience, so my dog went into the deep fryer.

Before chowing down on the main course, I started with an order of mozzarella sticks ($5.95). The waitress brought a basket with eight plump cheese sticks and a side of marinara sauce.

I had eaten about half of my appetizer when my dog arrived. It was so long the bun couldn't hold it all. A meaty chili covered the dog up to the edges of the bun, and some spicy mustard added an extra kick.

I polished off my dog and a couple cups of Coke ($1.75) and paid at the counter. I left looking forward to my next trip to the Dog House.
