Dena's Cafe offers lunch with a view
Contributed by: LogOn The Loggerhead on 4/5/2006

LogOn didn't have to stray too far from home to find good food last week. I just popped out of the Indian River near the Jensen Beach Causeway and found my latest lunch destination.

Dena's Cafe is an older, nondescript building just off Indian River Drive. The exterior isn't that impressive, but inside I found a colorful restaurant with character and good food.

I enjoyed the charm of the restaurant's interior, but like any good turtle, I wanted to bask in the sun. So I decided to eat on Dena's porch. Umbrellas and the building itself shaded a few tables, but I sat in the light.

The waitress brought me a glass of sweet tea ($1.50) and a menu. I quickly scanned the "morning menu" before flipping to the other side to see what I could get for lunch.

I noticed several appetizing options such as a Rueben, Philly cheesesteak, a half-pound burger and a "big fish sandwich." Most of the lunch items cost between $6.95 and $8.95, and all come with a choice of homemade fries, potato salad, fruit salad or cottage cheese. I asked for a ham club ($7.95) with fries.

While I waited for my meal, I enjoyed the breeze off the Intracoastal Waterway and the view. I watched cars disappear over the causeway. I saw a fisherman dragging a net along the bottom of the river. And my eyes followed a pelican as it searched for a place to land.

After a brief wait, my ham club arrived cut in four pieces with the fries in the middle. The menu warned me I'd need a big mouth to take a full bite of the club. The sandwich was stacked high with toasted bread, ham, bacon, lettuce and tomatoes.

I quickly devoured my club and fries and relaxed on the porch for a few minutes, soaking in the rays and the scenery. Then I reluctantly went to the counter inside and paid for my meal. Even turtles have to come out of the sun and head back to work.

Sounds really nice. I have been looking for a nice neighborhood diner of sorts just to grab a good bite and sit and chat with friends! Wish the hours were a bit later but that's cool!
