Teenagers duck, dodge through tournament

Martin County middle and high school students recently gathered in Jensen Beach to play a game popular with younger students.

Twelve teams participated in a teen dodgeball tournament on Aug. 26 at the Langford Park volleyball courts. The tournament is becoming a semiannual tradition that seems to grow more popular every time it's held, said Danielle Larschan, teen coordinator for the Martin County Parks and Recreation Department.

The six-player teams brought coaches and carefully crafted strategies with them. El Diablo, a team from Hidden Oaks Middle School, used a "crossfire" technique in its games and went into the tournament with the main goal of "trusting each other," said player David Gold.

The teens also showed off an in-depth knowledge of the 2004 movie " Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story." Skillz That Killz, which borrowed its name from the movie, warmed up by dodging doughnuts instead of balls.

"If you can dodge a doughnut, you can dodge a ball," said team member Michael "Patches" Izzolo.

Players on the first-place middle school team, Whoopsum, were Nick Reeves, Benny DiCiaccio, Donny Smith, Tanner Chauvin, Paul Walker III and James Kemp. The first-place high school team, 2 Arabs and a Bunch of White Guys, consisted of Eric Serakas, Alec Ulibarri, Joshua Chagani, Sean Chagani, Aric Boucher and James Kusel.

The Martin County Parks and Recreation Department, the Children's Services Council of Martin County and the Teen Advisory Board sponsored the tournament, and Play It Again Sports donated the dodgeballs for the tournament.
