Protect Yourself In An Auto Accident
Contributed by: Jason Guari on 7/2/2007

For this month's LAW CORNER, I wanted to talk about what to do if you're involved in an auto accident. With more traffic congestion on our roadways, it is imperative for you to protect yourself by being prepared and knowledgeable about what to do.

First things first. Stay calm. If you think you or anyone else is injured, dial 911 and get medical attention immediately. Remember - your health, well-being and safety come first.

Immediately turn your hazard lights on. If your vehicle is blocking traffic or you feel you're in an unsafe position, move your car. Otherwise, leave it where it came to rest.

Once you're in a safe position, exchange information with the other driver, including name, phone number, vehicle registration, driver's license number and insurance policy information. Do not talk about the accident with the other driver. If there was any damage to either automobile or any injuries, call the police and wait until they arrive to explain what happened.

If there are any witnesses, get their names, addresses and phone numbers.

If you have a camera or a camera phone, take pictures and sketch a diagram of the scene. It will be important to note any skid marks or other physical evidence including where the cars came to final rest.

After the accident, call your insurance agent or your insurance company to report the crash, and, if any of the vehicles were damaged or anyone was injured, call an attorney who specializes in personal injury to help you navigate through the legal process and make sure your rights are protected.

One important reminder - do not agree to give a recorded statement to anyone without your attorney present.

We have developed an "Auto Accident" checklist, located in the "Auto Accidents" section of our website. Print this checklist and keep it in your glove box. It will be very helpful if you are ever involved in an accident. You can also call us at (561) 366-9099, and we will be happy to send you auto accident checklists for you and your family.

If you need legal advice regarding a car accident or have any questions regarding your auto insurance policy, please do not hesitate to call me at (561) 366-9099 or email me at jguari@murrayguari.com. I would be happy to answer your questions free of charge.
