Going with the flow: Tips on plumbing
Contributed by: Diane Smoot on 4/18/2008

Water conservation is a hot topic for Florida homeowners. Sherri Wilson and family represent the new generation of Custom Plumbing, a family-owned business specializing in plumbing practices that use the latest products and technologies. The company is constantly researching alternatives for improving plumbing practices and they are eager to share their findings with others in the industry. Sherri Wilson took a few moments to talk about the plumbing industry and provide tips for homeowners.

"Green" is the new trend in plumbing. What are some ways I can conserve water and save money?
In response to the "green" movement, many top manufacturers offer water conserving toilets and faucets that save water without compromising style. Other products that are useful for water and energy conservation include reclaimed water systems and solar water heater systems.

Is there a big difference in products purchased at a "big box" store and those supplied by a plumber?
It has been our experience that when homeowners supply their own product from a "big box" store, the job almost always becomes more complicated and costly. There are often parts missing or parts that are not purchased because the homeowner is not familiar with all of the necessary components needed for the installation and operation. Products supplied by a reputable plumber will be of the highest quality within the homeowner's budget. When selecting fixtures, a plumber can make recommendations, when needed, about new systems and products that they have already tested and that meet the homeowner's goals of aesthetics and energy savings. Any product supplied by a reputable plumber will be warranted.

What are some questions I should ask a plumbing contractor before I hire them for a job?
First ensure they are licensed and insured. Make sure the job you need done is something the plumber has extensive experience doing. There are a lot of poorly trained contractors out there and you need to steer clear of them. Make sure the plumber offers a warranty on their work. Ask for references-and call them. Did the workers show up on time? Did they clean up their work area and leave your home as clean as when they arrived? Were you pleased with the quality of the work? If there were problems, were they resolved quickly?

What are some of the issues facing the plumbing industry?
Besides the housing market slow-down and rising fuel costs, the most critical issue facing our industry today is finding competent employees. As a forward-thinking plumbing company, we are addressing the idea of an in-house apprentice program. We believe in training our employees to be plumbers, not installers. We want our employees to understand the full scope of plumbing and not specialize in one small area.
