Tom Ievoli is a teacher in Boca Raton Florida. He lives in Port Saint Lucie, 1 ½ hrs north of his students at Alexander D Henderson University School. A lab school that teaches K-12 th grades. His commute is not uncommon to the people of south Fla. During the day Tom teaches to hungry young minds. In the evenings Tom coaches girls and boy's middle school soccer, and what ever small amount of financial compensation he receives he turns into an educational adventure for his students.
For example not long ago he read a story in Wolverine comics that mirrored the plight of genocide in areas like Rwanda and lesser social economical areas. He then took his own moneys and bought 20 copies from his local comic store and used them to further help his students understand.
Recently he purchased old encrusted [unclean] 1500 year old roman coins with the tedious and diligent task of cleaning and displaying the coins up to his students. Once the process is done he then allows the students to keep their pieces of restored history.
Now between driving to work [82 miles each way], raising a family, and nighttime coaching, he has been looking for and purchasing [with his own money] older computers to refurbish and add to his classroom. His students then learn pod casting and video production and editing.
Florida's number 1 resource may be its diversity of people. Toms plan is to bring youth and curiosity to age and experience by sending would be producers and news kids to senior centers. There they may tap into untold histories and stories stored away in the hearts and minds or our forefathers. Thus unlocking stories and history's to be recorded and broadcast by the youth of the area. By bringing young and old together in interaction and visiting, he is helping keep alive the lost art of communication. Not to mention bringing smiles and joy to those seniors and elderly who sometimes believe they are forgotten.
Tom is one of the new bread of teachers with fresh and exciting ways of keeping youth excited about learning. It should then come as no surprise that in only his second year of local teaching he has been nominated for teacher of the year.
So if you have an old or new computer [apple is welcome and easy to work] of any kind and you want it to be reborn in its use and value as a teaching tool, feel free to contact or drop it off. Your donation will be greatly appreciated and help further learning for the children of south Florida and the treasure coast.
Computers can be dropped off at Big Dog Comics of Fort Pierce, the Alexander D Henderson University School of Boca Raton or leave a message for Tom Ievoli at tievoli1@fau.edu and a pick up may be arranged. The youth and leaders of tomorrow, and our forefathers and their history of yesteryear, thank you today.
