One day while working at a Wildlife Shelter in North Carolina, a small fawn was rushed in for treatment. A farmer had found him in his field. The fawn was badly dehydrated and his eyes were infested with insects. It was obvious by his physical condition that he has been abandoned by his mother. His condition improved over the next several days and soon he was nursing from the bottles we gave him. Unfortunately, as his condition improved, his eyes did not and it was eventually determined by the Veterinarian that he was blind. By then all who had come in contact with him had fallen in love.
The Shelter had the necessary Federal Permits to keep and rehabilitate deer. He remains there today with the most wonderful little "deer shed" and a large piece of fenced property in which he can roam on beautiful sunny days. There are many animals at this shelter, but his best friend is an Emu.
The attached photo is of me feeding him. He grew attached to several of us and could always identify which volunteer was feeding him by the perfume we wore. It was pretty remarkable!
