Installing a sufficient sub-base below brick pavers will eliminate the sinking and settling concerns of many on the Treasure Coast.
Stuart, FL - June 26
th, 2007 -- The overwhelming majority of brick paver driveways that have sinking and settling issues are attributed to the fact that either the contractor or the homeowner did not install a sufficient sub-base. In order to eliminate any sinking, settling, or ruts from the vehicle tires; a crushed lime rock "DOT Road Rock" sub-base must be installed. This is the same base material installed under most highways and local streets. The crushed lime rock base should be 4" - 6" deep for residential driveways. Although the sub-base depth is different according to the existing soil conditions, 4" - 6" seems to be the average from my experience. A "concrete sand" base alone is not adequate.
Most municipalities do not require that a crushed lime rock base be installed. Apex Pavers made the decision to install a lime rock base in every driveway as a standard, not the exception. Having the confidence of the proper sub-base, Apex Pavers is able to guarantee no sinking and/or settling. Hoping this bit of education and guarantee help remove some of the negative notions around brick pavers.
