Plant Selections for Landscape Situations ORH1512 Tuesday afternoons 3-5:45 (we return in time for the evening classes), 16 weeks, early January-early May. This class matches plant selections to the varied landscape contexts in our area, choosing the right plant for the right place. We gather atpoints of horticultural interest to examine the plantings, often with the guidance of the persons in charge. We expect (no promises) to visit The Garden of the Four Arts, Pan's Garden, The Eaton Garden, The Univ. of Florida (Ft. Pierce) Demonstration Garden, Leu Botanical Garden (Orlando, this trip optional), The Breakers, and Downtown at the Gardens, plus varied commercial sites and wholesale plant nurseries. It tends to be social and oodles of fun. Instructor: Dr. George Rogers
Plants of South Florida Ecosystems (Native Plant Identification) ORH2511Thursday afternoons: 3-5:45 (we return in time for the evening classes), 16 weeks, early January-early May This is a fun, daytime class. We meet usually at different natural areas representing varied habitat types, and study the native plants, mainly to learn to identify them. All the field sites are reasonably "civilized" (no bush-whacking nor wading through gator-infested swamps). Students must be able to walk a mile on trails. The class does involve standard outdoor conditions (light rain, friendly mosquitoes, puddles in the path, anacondas). We learn to recognize about 200 native species and become familiar with many of the public natural areas within about a 40-minute drive of the PBCC campus. Instructor: Dr. George Rogers
Annuals and Perennials ORH2516 Thursday nights 6:30-9:20, 16 weeks, early January-early May. The instructor, Lloyd Singleton, is Landscape Manager of the nationally famous gardens at The Breakers on Palm Beach. He will turn us into experts on selecting annuals and other short-lived plantings, planning a year-round garden, site preparation and soil amendment, costing and sourcing annuals, annuals maintenance, and troubleshooting. If we're nice, he'll show us his work at The Breakers!
