This year's harsh economic conditions have left many trying to figure out ways to cut costs. Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary & Hospital is one of these businesses and this week welcomed FPL's Energy Makeover team, along with electrical and lighting contractors, who donated their time to make Safe Harbor more energy efficient. The team installed programmable thermostats, compact fluorescent light bulbs and LED exit signs, all of which can be implemented by any business small and medium. The upgrades, which were paid for by FPL shareholders, are expected to save Safe Harbor almost $3000 a year on its energy costs.
The makeover event followed a free Business Energy Evaluation that FPL conducted last week to determine specific actions Safe Harbor could take to reduce its energy usage and save money. It is part of a month-long education campaign to celebrate Energy Awareness Month. FPL's educational initiatives mirror the U.S. Department of Energy's theme for the Month, "A Sustainable Energy Future: Putting All the Pieces Together." Throughout October, FPL is issuing weekly "Money-Saving Myth Busters" about common, energy-related misconceptions and highlighting important advances that customers are or will be benefiting from as FPL makes significant improvements in the electrical system.
FPL's Business Energy Evaluations and Home Energy Evaluations help customers learn about the tools available to them to help them become more energy efficient and save money on their monthly energy bills. If you want to learn more or schedule your own free in-person energy evaluation please call 1-800-FPL-2434 or visit www.fpl.com/bee.
Other free programs FPL offers its customers to help cut costs and save energy include Business On Call, which allows FPL to occasionally cycle off a participant's air conditioning system for brief periods of time and only when absolutely necessary. In return, the customer receives a credit on the monthly electric bill, even if FPL never cycles off the A/C equipment. Safe Harbor is on this program and is already saving an estimated $539 a year due to its participation. And Budget Billing, which helps make it easier for business and non-profits to manage their budgets. To prevent major fluctuations in the monthly bill, this program evens out energy costs so customers pay about the same every month.
