The Green Lantern has dimmed. R.I.P.
Contributed by: "Capt Joel" Kilmer - Big Dog Comics on 12/11/2006

Somewhere in the Comic book Universe a Green lantern went a little dimmer on Saturday December 9, 2006. Artist and creator Marty "Mart" Nodell passed away.

Marty was born November 15, 1915 and was best known as the artist and creator of the "Golden Age" Green Lantern, a comic Hero who could form items and weapons of green energy from his ring, which was powered by his will and determination. Green Lantern debuted in All American Comics # 16, cover date July 1940, and the rest as they say is History. Along with other DC Comic Heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Shazam, Green Lantern came from a time of simple stories of good verses evil. Back when you bought a comic, your buddies bought a different comic, and you rolled them up and but them in your back pocket as you went out to play stickball or kick the can. Later you might lay in the grass and read a fantastic adventure and then do "trades or swaps" with your friend so you could read a different story.

Marty also worked for Timely comics before they became Marvel Comics. He enjoyed working on Captain America, the Human Torch, and the Sub-Mariner, much to the delight of many of comic's fans. His number one fan and companion of 63 years was his wife Carrie Nodell. They were an inspiration to dozens of aspiring artist at conventions across the United States. Marty used to talk about things and say "back in my day", but it was a message or story that reflected the hard work and dedication it took to be an artist. There was always knowledge in his words.

Marty was a man of small build but larger than life energy and spirit. And Carrie, like a superhero's side kick was always beside him with support and smiles. Upon her passing in April 2004, there were hundreds of blogs and posts about how Marty and Carrie took one on one time with artists and fans and how these two wonderful people had made a difference in there life's.

I am lucky enough to have known both Marty and Carrie. I was always greeted with a hug and a kiss from Carrie and inquiries about my wife after I was married. And like my grandfather, a firm [sometimes almost crushing] handshake and soulful smile from Marty was always waiting for me. Classic and classy could be used to describe them.

Marty was also responsible for the co-creation of the Pillsbury doughboy. He loved to do little fan sketches of the giggly mascot. He was a generous and honorable man and the last of the "old guard" of comic creators. He helped pave a way for fun and adventure for generations of comic readers past, in the present, and for generations to come. As the Green lantern oath goes,

In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship evils might,
Beware my power, Green Lanterns light!

Your work will always shine on, Thanks for being part of the magic of my childhood.
