Jupiter Amputee Receives Special Gift: Left Foot
Contributed by: Tom Saunders on 1/2/2007

When Jordan McCannon was only twelve, he suffered a fate worse than most boys his age could imagine. While grocery shopping with his mom, Jordan reached for a large Smithfield ham, which he soon learned was too heavy and odd-shaped for his young hands to grasp. The ham, as fate would have it, fell from Jordan's hands and travelled south at high velocity. It's destination: Jordan's left foot. The large pork product that previously made its home along the James River, soon found itself embedded in the upper portion of Jordan's foot, shattering cartilage and bone. He was rushed past the Idaho potatoes, through the beer aisle, and out to an awaiting ambulance. Time was of the essence.

Try as they might, the doctors could not save Jordan's foot. The Smithfiled ham had done too much damage. The only option was to amputate. And amputate they did, thus leaving a scared twelve year old boy with not two feet, but one foot.

Jordan is now thirty eight and has adjusted to having one foot all these years.

"It's not so bad, but two feet are better than one. I get great deals at the shoe store. Everything's half off!" Jordan says with a smile. "And a pack of socks can last me weeks!" But Jordan was quoted saying this before the big operation. Before his secret dream became a reality. Before some thoughtful donor offered his left foot, same size, same hairiness, to Jordan.

A man that was made aware of Jordan's long plight of one-footedness convinced himself that he had been two-footed long enough and that Jordan was just the right person to receive the gift of his left foot. This man, located in Eastern Europe, had his foot amputated and shipped FedEx to a world-renowned foot specialist here in the states. Jordan remembers the day the doctors called with the good news.

"The phone rang, and it was Dr. Johanson on the other end. He said, 'Good news Jordan, your new foot just arrived!' I was so excited I started to hop up and down on one leg!! I was finally going to be whole again."

But Jordan did have reservations about this risky operation. "I didn't want to give up the great deals at the shoe store. I mean, it took about three weeks for my family and friends to finally convince me that's it's better to have two feet that to save a few bucks. I was reluctant, but I said 'Let's do this thing!'"

The operation took nearly twenty three hours and was an astounding success. Jordan's two feet are perfectly matched, with no scars due to modern-day medical techniques.

Jordan's wishes have been all fulfilled.

Jordan wishes everyone a happy holiday season.
