FOR JUNE 2008 HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS WHO HAVEN'T GOTTEN ACCEPTED TO THE COLLEGE OF THEIR CHOICE: THERE'S HOPE YET, SAYS LEADING FLORIDA EDUCATOR

-Most Competitive College Admissions Season In History-

BOCA RATON, Fla., June 2008-For many high school seniors, last week was among the sweetest of the year: graduation, the hard-earned satisfaction of having made it through high school and the happy anticipation of new experiences at college in the fall.

Not all seniors, however, have as much to celebrate. Amid the most competitive college admissions season in history, a number of students either have not yet been accepted to a college or have soured on the colleges where they were accepted, and have not yet enrolled.

Not to worry, though, says the head of one of southern Florida's leading private educational providers. There are still many options for students who haven't been accepted to the college or university of their choice.

Hundreds of schools have admissions deadlines of July 1 or later, and many others offer rolling admissions, says Jason Sholl, Assistant Director of Private Tutoring Services, Inc., headquartered in Boca Raton, with offices in Wellington and West Palm Beach. That means, he says, there's still time for students who wish they'd applied to more schools to apply and get in.

Sholl points out that many colleges haven't filled their admissions quotas for the 2008-2009 school-year-despite it being the busiest admissions year on record, with a record 3.3 million students graduating from high school this spring. As of May 1, he says, the National Association of College Admissions Counselors reported that 275 four-year colleges still had openings for incoming freshmen. For students who have already taken some college courses and can apply as transfer students, that list is even longer, he says.

Another option, Sholl says: students can consider applying for spring semester. Many top schools and programs conduct a second round of admissions-with deadlines typically in October or November-for students beginning in the spring. At many schools, spring admissions is less competitive, he says.

Or students can apply to community college as a feeder school. Most public and state universities automatically accept students transferring from the regional two-year colleges that feed into them, he says. So, for example, he says, if students didn't get into the University of Colorado or the University of Texas, like they'd hoped, they should consider attending a junior college in Denver or Austin. They'll be at the school of their choice in less than two years. And in the meantime, living in the same city and-quite possibly-even taking some of the same courses.

Students who didn't make the first round on their admission applications, Sholl says, should consider traveling, volunteering or taking courses at a local community college or through an accredited distance learning program. They should ask themselves what courses or experiences might have made a difference on their applications. Whether or not they'll be going to the college of their dreams in the fall, it's important for them to stay engaged.
