Eighty-nine graduates of a nine-week English language program, including thirteen who had perfect attendance, have been honored by El Sol, Jupiter's Neighborhood Resource Center.
The graduates bring to more then 300 the number of adult immigrants who have completed the ESL evening instruction program since it began in February of 2007. Summer session students received certificates at a ceremony this past Friday that included muscial entertainment by a sextet of Jupiter and Limestone Creek Elementary School student.
El Sol's adult English classes are co-sponsored by the School District of Palm Beach County. At Friday's ceremony ESL Coordinator Eileen Harden commended graduates, most of them from Guatamala and Mexico, for completing the nine-week summer ESL session. Special awards were given to the ESL teachers and to 13 students who had perfect attendance.
"In the one and a half years we have been providing English classes we now have a whole group of students who are proficient enough to hold conversations in English, which is pretty amazing given their work schedules and other commitments," Ms. Harden said. Registration for the Fall ESL program will begin in August.
El Sol is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization and offers day-time English classes, job training courses, computer classes and others, plus a daily job referral program that matches workers with employers to fill jobs. The Center is at 106 Military Trail and is the ony place legally sanctioned by the Town of Jupiter for employers to pick up workers. For information call 745-9860.
