SECOND GRADERS SPREAD HOLIDAY CHEER AT EASTER SEAL
Contributed by: Stephanie Uitenbroek on 12/27/2007

(Hobe Sound) - The second grade religious education class from St. Christopher's Catholic Church in Hobe Sound recently visited the Loveable Learners class at Easter Seals Igoe-Amar Child Development Center in West Palm Beach. The second graders were spreading holiday cheer to the preschool-aged children with special needs and disabilities.

Each holiday season, the children from St. Christopher's choose a charitable activity to teach them about giving to others. This year the students chose Easter Seals. During their visit they sang Christmas songs and gave each child a gift - one especially purchased for each child.

"In class we have been studying about being good citizens and disciples," said Heidi Reuwer, teacher for the St. Christopher's Catholic Church second grade class. "Choosing to visit and support the children at Easter Seals complemented our lesson."

Easter Seals Igoe-Amar Child Development Center is the area's only full-time center for children of ALL abilities. Easter Seals' helps children with disabling conditions due to birth, disease, accident or injury through pediatric speech, physical, occupational and behavioral therapies made available in a preschool setting. These services help prepare children for success in school while affording parents an opportunity to continue their careers or education.

"The event was very successful and the children enjoyed themselves," said Regina Thomson, Easter Seals board member and parent of second grader Jett from St. Christopher's Catholic Church. "The 'kid-on-kid' experience taught them how to be comfortable around children with disabilities and also how they will all one day go to school together."
