Turtle River Montessori in Jupiter Goes Van Gogh
Contributed by: Chelsea Reed on 1/26/2008

.<pre> Turtle River Montessori, in Jupiter, Florida, recently enjoyed an exciting visit from Go Van Gogh, a local interactive studio cafe located at the Abacoa Town Center. Go Van Gogh owner, Ellen Marshall, and manager, Diane Leach, spent time with each of the 125 students at the school decorating and painting ceramic tiles, plates, and platters for Turtle River Montessori's Annual Event and fundraiser scheduled for February 8 at the Abacoa Golf and Country Club. Go Van Gogh offers ceramic painting and glazing, beading, and parties, as well as camps and monthly special events in its studio. The ceramic tiles were beautifully embellished with the children's handprints, the plates with self portraits, and the platters with personalized contributions from each student. The art work will be sold as part of the auction during the school's annual fundraising event. This year's fundraising efforts are especially important, as Turtle River is beginning construction of a new school building and campus at the corner of Toney Penna and Maplewood Drive. The new campus will offer exceptional facilities for 250 students from pre-K through middle school that, when completed, will be the first private school in Florida to be a certified green building solely dedicated to private education. The new school will capture rainwater for irrigating the garden, construct solar panels that will be used for some of the exterior pumps, create a science living lab outside using drought resistant plants, and install functional transoms over the doors and a cupola in the hall to pull warm air out and bring in cooler air. The school plans on having 'fresh air days,' where they will open the windows and use these functional transoms. In addition, the new building will be 22,000 square feet, much larger than the 6,000 square foot school that now is just west of the Intracoastal, off Indiantown Road in Fisherman's Wharf.Turtle River Montessori prides itself for high standards in "whole education" by developing critical thinkers of the world and, in addition to its rich academic curriculum, offers sign language, Spanish, music, yoga and art. The school currently offers a pre-primary program (ages 3 - 6 years) and an elementary program (ages 6 - 10 years), going through to fifth grade. The goal for the new school, Jupiter's first certified green building, is to have an educational program through middle school. This year's annual fundraiser is themed 'Pirates of Turtle River' and includes a live auction and silent auction, dinner and entertainment and will target over 400 local families and friends of Turtle River -- all set among pirates, scallywags and landlubbers. Local businesses wishing to provide donations to the auction, receive advertising and promotional opportunities should contact 561-745-1995 to contribute.Photo: Turtle River Montessori Parent Jeanette Bourassa and her son Daniel
