Once again, Jupiter High School's Student Government Association swept away the competition at this year's District V Rally at West Boca High School winning an unprecedented seven awards on Saturday, February 23rd. The theme of the rally was "Think Pink", a tribute to staying healthy.
The Florida Association of Student Councils (FASC) consists of six districts, each including about ten counties. Jupiter, as part of Palm Beach County, belongs to the District V region. Each of the six districts meets twice a year, not including their rally. The rally includes a full day workshops, meals, guest speakers, icebreakers, team building activities, a Mr. and Mrs. District pageant, a parliamentary procedure competition, and an awards ceremony. Awards are given for the ten categories of the "Project of the Year" competition, for the scrapbook competition, and for the Hall of Ideas competition. Each school is only allowed to submit five of the ten categories to the "project of the Year" competition due to the short amount of time allotted to judging.
Upon arrival to West Boca High School on Saturday, an extremely enthusiastic group of thirty Jupiter High School Student Government Association members submitted their five possible "Project of the Year" notebooks, a heaping scrapbook, and a Hall of Ideas display into the competition. They, then, proceeded to quickly eat breakfast in order to get in a round of traditional FASC games before the first business meeting began. Throughout the day SGA members participated in a number of team building activities and workshops such as yoga and fundraising ideas.
Following tradition, the Mr. and Ms. District pageant was a favorite activity for most delegates. The pageant consists of a casual wear fashion show, a talent portion, a formal wear fashion show, and a question and answer period of all contestants. Competing from Jupiter High School were a very charismatic pair, Eric Gibson and Shelley Urbanovich. The couple entranced the crowd by performing an original song, "Puzzle of my Life" that they wrote together in preparation for this show. Shelley Urbanovich took home the title of Miss District V for Jupiter High School for the first time in fifteen years!
In addition to winning the title of Miss District V, Jupiter took home an outstanding six other awards. In the "Project of the Year" competition, Jupiter High School won first place in the fundraising and environmental concerns categories, second place in the community service category, and third place in the membership motivation category. For the Hall of Ideas display, Jupiter High School received the second place trophy. Also, Jupiter High School won the third place trophy in the scrapbook competition. This was a great year for Jupiter High School Student Government Association, and we hope to continue it next week at the FASC State Convention!
