History comes alive at Jupiter High School
Contributed by: Madeline Miller on 4/22/2008

History came alive at Jupiter High Schoolin a performance given by Sheila Arnold in the JHS auditorium on April 16. Ms. Arnold is a historical narrative performer from Williamsburg, Virginia, who recreated two historical figures, Zora Neale Hurston, the author of Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Daisy Bates, the President of the NAACP in Arkansas during the Little Rock Integration Crisis of the 1950's. Daisy Bates was instrumental in helping integrate Central High School. Because of her leadership, the Supreme Court Case of Brown v. the Board of Education was enforced in America and segregation finally came to an end in schools. Zora Neale Hurston was a charismatic author who wrote about African American culture during the Gilded Age of the 1920's & 1930's. These two African American women lived through trying times but made a difference in people's lives. Sheila Arnold, in portraying these strong women, makes a difference in the lives of students today.
