Gent transitions to area superintendent
Contributed by: Jessica Gillespie on 5/1/2008

Wayne Gent will miss personally knowing students and teachers when he transitions from Dwyer High School's principal to North Area superintendent in early summer.

"The day to day interactions with the students is one of the highlights of the job," said Gent. Gent has been Dwyer's principal for the past two school years, during which he has had the chance to watch students grow academically and socially. Last year, Gent and his Dwyer team raised the school grade from a C to an A. Gent views this as his greatest success at Dwyer, and he feels that his two years at Dwyer have been two of the best of his professional career.

These successes as well as his previous experience are reasons that he was recommended for North Area superintendent; he held this position from 2000 to 2003. After seeing the challenges that schools face on a daily basis, he's prepared. "I will offer quality leadership and quality support to our schools each and every day," said Gent.

Gent is also running for the superintendent of Martin County, where he is a resident. His campaign is going very well. "I'm generating a lot of support, meeting a lot of folks, and I'm very excited about the process," Gent said. When Martin County's current superintendent, Sara Wilcox, announced her retirement, Gent filed for candidacy. Being a school district superintendent has been a professional goal of his, and Gent is confident that his qualifications and experience will make him an effective superintendent.

Throughout his job transitioning and election process, Gent holds his ideals close. "I want all kids to be successful. I want them to really stretch themselves and make good decisions." His other goals include increasing student achievement through effective staff development and support for our schools.

If Gent is elected superintendent of Martin County, he will take office in November and resign his position as North Area superintendent in Palm Beach County. Dr. Joseph Lee, principal of Duncan Middle School in Palm Beach Gardens, will be the new principal of Dwyer High School as of this summer.
