Sylvan Learning Center in Jupiter recently sponsored the National Geographic Bee at Timber Trace Elementary in Palm Beach Gardens. The tutoring center provided atlases to the winner, fifth grade student Chase Major, and two runner-ups, Joshua Pink, a fourth grade student, and Alex Ortiz, a fifth grade student. Fourth grade teacher Dawn Meade coordinated the school's competition.
Todd Isham, Sylvan's center director in Jupiter, said, "We are always looking for ways to support and partner with our local schools, their teachers and the students. We plan to continue a community partnership with Timber Trace and other schools in our area."
Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography.
Schools with students in grades four through eight are eligible for this entertaining and challenging test of geographic knowledge. Timber Trace winner Chase Major is now waiting to see if he qualifies for the state competition, which is based on a written examination test score.
Sylvan Learning, a leading pre-K-12 education services company, has been coaching students toward academic success for more than 25 years.
