Gloria Berman's Lecture at Burt Reynold's Museum
Contributed by: Penny Sheltz on 3/5/2008

Gloria Berman, a documentary film maker who had studied at the Burt Reynolds Museum gave a seminar there Tuesday March 4.
She told the audience about various techniques useful in producing documentaries to get their stories told.

Berman started watching a lot of documentaries and joined the Writers Guild of America and received her card so she felt more professional. After she selected a subject, she did a large amount of research and developed her story to make it more interesting. She stressed the importance of being accurate and keeping support documents. She explained how she made the film "Comfortably Numb, " an award winning documentary on a low budget by exposure at film festivals and the internet. Berman produced the movie for less than $4,000.

Berman was stirred when her grandson was initially diagnosed with ADHD. He was given so many medications by the time he was 6 years old until it was finally determined with the right diagnosis that he had mild autism. He now survives on no medication. "It breaks my heart to see families suffering when there are other options and approaches," Berman says.

Gloria Berman, the Director and Producer of "Comfortably Numb," created the Best Horizons Foundation, a non-profit organization, which promotes awareness of this problem and supports innovative programs.
