Juno Pier Fishing & Surfing
Contributed by: Penny Sheltz on 5/7/2008

Fishermen were catching Moonfish at the Juno Pier Saturday.
They are called Moonfish because they can be caught at night under lights.
They are also called Lookdown's and are in the Jack familly but very good eating. Also in the Lookdown/ Moonfish family are Pompano so Lookdowns are closer in taste to Pompano than Jacks. They look like they weigh much more in pictures than they actually do and are fun to catch on bait or a jig. They live in shallow coastal waters all the way from Maine to South America. When young they have long filaments coming off the first dorsal spine of the dorsal fin. They have thin bodies and high "foreheads" with a good eating wedge of tender flesh in the top of their heads. The surfers were catching some good waves at the pier.
