The 13th Annual Grand Slam-Castaways KWD fishing tournament was held Saturday May 10. The tournament entry fee was $200 per boat and offered anglers the opportunity to fish for a share of the prize purse, which included $50,000 in cash and prizes. More than 325 boats participated and got a chance to win a raffle for a Bahama 31 boat with twin Mercury 275 HP engines worth $250,000 that will be won next May 2009.
The Grand Prize of $10,000 for the heaviest king, dolphin or wahoo was won by Paul Sabayrac, 18, of Jupiter with his 57.1- pound wahoo, He said the money will help him in the Fall when he heads to University of Florida. Paul was fishing with his father Bill, his brother Will and friend P.J. Peters on the Sabrayrac's 31-foot boat, Goin' Raptor. He said he fought the 57.1 pound wahoo on a spinning rod on 20 pound test line, with a wire leader. The Wahoo hit his live goggle-eye at about noon just off Lost Tree in about 190 feet of water.
The Second Prize of $2,000 was won with a 56.2 pound kingfish caught by J. P. Josephson with Captain John Colamarino. This big kingfish was caught around noon on a dead goggle-eye south of the Jupiter Inlet in about 100 feet of water .
Ricardo Mejia caught a 45.3 pound kingfish and was weighed in at the Sailfish Marina as the second-heaviest kingfish in the tournament.
There were prizes for the heaviest fish in women's and junior angler divisions. Pam Kalil caught a 31.9-pound kingfish weighed at the Sailfish Marina and won Pam $1,500 as the heaviest fish caught by a woman angler. Although Dolphin were scarce Saturday Colleen O'Brien had the heaviest Dolphin at 30.2. Chase Pappas, won the junior angler prize for a 26.2 pound kingfish.
Generous anglers donated many of their fish during the tournament weigh-in to Hospice of Palm Beach County
The awards barbecue was at Carlin Park from 3-8:30 p.m. Proceeds from this event go to benefit Coastal Conservation Association, Seagull Industries for the Disabled and Hospice of Palm Beach County.. Grand Slam Sportsfishing Supply info is at (561) 746-0526.
