The Friends of Jupiter Beach organized a volunteer beach cleanup and recognition of "World Ocean Day" on Saturday, June 7. This event was sponsored by the Solid Waste Authority. As a special treat, the Jupiter High School MARS Robotic Club gave a Robot Demonstration featuring "Ballistic", a ball-throwing robot.
Volunteers were divided into teams to clean 2 1/2 miles of beach, sidewalks, and park grounds. They returned for a light continental breakfast and beverages, a brief program and "thanks for coming" door prizes. Community services hours were awarded.
More than 340 pounds of trash and recyclables were collected Saturday.
Since September 2006, Friends of Jupiter Beach have been tracking the weight of garbage and recyclables removed from Jupiter Beach at monthly cleanups. The total now exceeds 11,000 pounds removed from September 2006 to May 2008. More than 5,000 pounds of recyclables have been separated and transferred voluntarily by Rapid Removal, a Palm Beach Gardens firm. The offer by Rapid Removal, in fall of 2006, to collect the separated recyclables following each cleanup has resulted in a nearly 50% reduction in the amount of garbage going to landfill.
Friends of Jupiter Beach is a 14-year-old not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 volunteer organization dedicated to organizing monthly beach cleanups, providing free "dog bags" at the beach and preserving dog-friendly beach privileges along a 2 1/2 mile stretch of historically dog-friendly shoreline.
At the cleanup breakfast Alan and Barbara Patti and Wally and Penny Sheltz were awarded beautiful "Loxahatchee Lament" Books from the Town of Jupiter for their hard work and dedication to Jupiter Beach.
The next beach cleanup is July 5th sponsored by the Habitat Cafe in Oakbrook which is bringing their famous Muffin Tops. For further information please consult the website at www.friendsofjupiterbeach.com or call 748-8140.
