The Friends of Jupiter Beach are sponsoring an "All American Beach Cleanup" volunteer day on Saturday, July 5 from 8:00am-10:00am.
This event is sponsored by Habitat Cafe of Palm Beach Gardens in Oakbrook. The owners, Phil and Lori Smillie, will be providing the breakfast for volunteers, featuring their famous muffin tops and other goodies, complemented by Einstein Bagels.
Volunteers arrive at 8:00am at the Anita Lankler Pavilion in Ocean Cay Park east of US Hwy 1 and Marcinski Road (north Palm Beach County), divide into teams to clean 2 1/2 miles of beach, sidewalks, and park grounds, then regroup at 9:30 am for light continental breakfast and beverages, a brief program and "thanks for coming" door prizes. Community services hours are awarded. All volunteers are welcome and advance registration is not required. When weather is in doubt, call 561-748-8140 for a "cancel" message.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring recycled shopping bags for use in cleanup efforts, garden gloves, sunscreen and bug spray. Closed-toe shoes are required.
Since September 2006, Friends of Jupiter Beach have been tracking the weight of garbage and recyclables removed from Jupiter Beach at monthly cleanups, for a total exceeding 11,600 pounds of trash removed from September 06 - June 08. More than 5,000 pounds of recyclables have been separated and transferred voluntarily by Rapid Removal, a Palm Beach Gardens firm. Previously, the number of garbage bags collected were recorded, but the change was made to so that observers could fully comprehend the extent of the garbage problem at the beach and, more importantly, the tremendous benefit to the beach, dunes and ocean environment provided by Friends of Jupiter Beach. The offer by Rapid Removal, in fall of 2006, to collect the separated recyclables following each cleanup has resulted in a nearly 50% reduction in the amount of garbage going to landfill.
Friends of Jupiter Beach is a 14-year-old not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 volunteer organization dedicated to organizing monthly beach cleanups, providing free "dog bags" at the beach, preserving dog-friendly beach privileges and enhancing our beach and marine environment through education and community service... along a 2 1/2 mile stretch of historically dog-friendly shoreline.
