Hand Drumming Classes Come to the Treasure Coast
Contributed by: Desi Faraci on 7/2/2008

Hand drumming circles have become a common element of the contemporary scene internationally and locally. But for those who may have never heard of hand drumming or organized circle events, they will soon make the discovery taking place in their local parks, wellness centers, libraries, schools and churches. This recreational activity, motivational tool and some say therapeutic instrument is growing in popularity and demand.

Drummer and facilitator, Desi Faraci, is bringing hand drumming workshops to the Treasure Coast of Florida. Her goal is to share the great vibrations and encourage a sense of community. Desi says the rhythmic cues of group drumming transform the participants and spectators alike. Hand drumming is used for stress reduction, promotes socialization, improves right and left brain coordination, mental stimulation, exercise and more. Many participants experience a sense of euphoria and burst of energy after a period of drumming. Group drumming can be an overall positive outlet for the mind, body and spirit.

Desi uses specifically the djembe drum to teach basic African rhythms and meditation. The djembe was used for centuries as a form of outward expression to convey the oral history of many tribes of West Africa. Since there was no formal written language, drum circles created an environment for dancing and singing which passed along the cultural history of the tribes over generations. Ceremonial drum circles were used for marriages, initiations, celebrations, harvest times and more.

Classes start mid July in Vero Beach, Fort Pierce and Jupiter and will run for 4 to 5 week sessions depending on the local. Djembe drums are available to rent for classes in limited supply and are also for sale. Pre-registration is highly encouraged and these events are great fun for all ages. No musical experience is necessary and learning to play the djembe has a minimal learning curve compared to traditional instruments. If your community, church, wellness center, school or business would like to sponsor a drumming workshop or circle event please contact Desi at 772-468-8813 for further details.
