An award-winning film, "When the Mountain Trembles," that chronicles the war and human rights abuses by the Guatemalan military against the largely defenseless Guatemalan Indian peasants, will be shown Friday, May 2 at 7 p.m. at El Sol, Jupiter's Neighborhood Resource Center.
The movie is narrated by Rigoberto Menchu, a Quiche Indian woman who won the 1992 Nobel Peace prize for her courageous struggle aginst the military regime in Guatemala. Three of Ms. Menchu's family were killed during the decades-long fight against the repressive Guatemala government.
When the Mountains Tremble has won the Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival, the Blue Ribbon Award at the American Film Festival and other honors. The film is the first in a series of monthly ""Friday Night at the Movies" programs that will be held at the non-profit El Sol Center that is at 106 Military Trail.
The show is free and open to the public and there will be a discussion following the show.
"We chose this particular film to launch our Movie Night program because the war and human rights abuses that are depicted forced many Guatemalans to flee their country and seek asylum in the United States, including some who settled in Jupiter," said Jill Hanson, El Sol board member and co-chair of the film program.
