El Norte, a movie about two Mayan Indian siblings' perilous journey from Guatemala through Mexico to the United States in pursuit of their dream of a better life will be shown Friday, June 13 at 7 p.m. at El Sol, Jupiter's Neighborhood Resource Center.
The film, which was partially financed by the Public Broadcasting Service, was described by Variety as the first epic of the independent film movement when it was released in 1983. It received an Oscar nomination for Best Orginal Screenplay in 1985. The show is the second in a series of "Friday Night at the Movies" sponsored by the non-profit El Sol Center at 106 Military Trail.
The show is free and open to the public. Refreshments will also be available. For information call 745-9860.
El Norte stars Zaide Silvia Gutierrez, as Rosa, and David Villalpando as Enrique who are forced to flee Guatemala in the early 1980s because of ethnic and political persecution, finally arrivng in Los Angeles where they struggle to survive as they are exploited by several unscrupulous employers. Reviewer Roger Ebert said, "El Norte tells their story with astonishing visual beauty, with unashamed melodrama, with anger leavened by hope. It is a 'Grapes of Wrath' for our time."
The movie was directed by Gregory Nava and produced by Anna Thomas from a screenplay by Nava and Thomas and is based on a true life story.
