It received an Oscar nomination for Best Orginal Screenplay in 1985. The show is the second in a series of "Friday Night at the Movies" sponsored by the non-profit El Sol Center at 106 Military Trail.

Reviewer Roger Ebert said, "El Norte tells their story with astonishing visual beauty, with unashamed melodrama, with anger leavened by hope. It is a 'Grapes of Wrath' for our time."
