Great Lent starts for Eastern Orthodox Christians
Contributed by: Faith Fick on 3/5/2008

On March 10th, Eastern Orthodox Christians will begin Great Lent.
St. Peter the Apostle Orthodox Mission will observe, "Foregiveness Sunday"on March 9th. This service is conducted to remind us that we must forgive each other in order to obtain forgivness from God. This Sunday is also called "Cheesefare Sunday" since it is the last day to eat dairy products until Pascha(Easter) celebrated on April 27th.
Great Lent is held in preparation for the greatest feast of all in the Orthodox faith, which is Pascha, the resurrection of our Lord.
We are advised to take away from our daily meals, meat and diary products. Also, wine and oil. What is most important is to add additional prayer, give to the less fortunate and strive towards personal improvement.
St. Peter the Apostle Orthodox Mission conducts services at Lighthouse Elementary School, 4750 Dakota Drive in Jupiter. Driving on Military Road it is two miles south of Indiantown Road or north of Donal Ross Road, turning left unto Dakota Drive.
Service begin at 10am. Fellowship and a lesson on Orhtodoxy follows. Additional reading material about Orthodoxy is available at their bookstore.
