McCarthy’s Restaurant helps Mission Ministry
Contributed by: Jan Davisson on 6/2/2008

To start raising funds for the Sister Parish in San Miguel Ixtahuacan, Guatemala created by the Mission Ministry at St. Peter Catholic Church in Jupiter, McCarthy's Restaurant & Pub in Tequesta is providing a special St. Peter Mission Ministry Night on June 6. "To make it more of a party atmosphere, we're bringing in Noel Kingston, our Irish balladeer for a great sing along and lots of fun, " said Frank Gillespie, co owner of McCarthy's.
Throughout the evening, 15% of parishioner's dining checks will be donated to the Mission Ministry. In addition, a raffle will be held for a Palm Tree glass vase etched and donated by Unique Glass Art of Jupiter.

The new project started last month when four members of St. Peter Catholic Church in Jupiter experienced a life changing event on a recent trip to San Miguel Ixtahuacan, Guatemala. Pastor Fr. Don Finney, Sister Marta, a Guadalupan nun from St. Peter parish, and parishioners Mike Villella and Sherry Krasula spent 7 days getting to know the people of San Miguel Catholic Church and forming a global partnership to create a Sister Parish.

"During our recent visit, we discovered a world quite different from Jupiter but similar in many ways, "said. Fr. Finney. "We encountered people who love their families and work hard to provide a better life for them. We saw people struggling with poverty, illness and hunger. But we also saw, that despite these everyday struggles, they were a people of great faith, joy and reverence for the gifts that God gives them.

The Mission Ministry at St. Peter strives to promote ways in which members of the parish can live out the call to be good stewards by sharing time, talent and treasure with others at home and at the Sister Parish in San Miguel Ixtahuacan, Guatemala.

The San Miguel community suffered much during the 30 years of civil war that gripped Guatemala during its recent past. A major challenge for the parish is how to empower its parishioners to continue to grow in their faith, advance their education and to assist in their providing for their economic survival.
"The Catholic parish encompasses a huge area in the Highlands of Guatemala. The population is made up of Indigenous Mayan people who live simple lives. The parish is surrounded by approximately 30 villages in the mountains," said Fr. Finney. "We can help them in a number of ways by providing chapels in the surrounding villages; creating opportunities for local artisans to be able to sell their crafts; and empowering the Mayan women to continue the age old skill of making colorful cloth for use in clothing and crafts.

To acquaint St. Peter parishioners with the new Sister Parish, Father Erick Gruloos, the pastor of San Miguel, is visiting St. Peter Catholic Church and spoke at all masses the weekend of June1.
Fr.Erick moved to Guatemala in 1985 from a parish in Lovendegem, Belgium. As a college student, he was inspired by a priest named Fr. Cesar Maes who had gone to Guatemala as a Missionary priest and spent 15 years. Fr. Erick is responsible for the parish of San Miguel and 33 surrounding village. He is a wonderfully inspiring priest who has dedicated his life to preaching the Word of God and ministering both personally and spiritually to the people of these villages.
