Three scoops of family, friends and fellowship topped with warm concern then sprinkled with love ads up to a heart warming day. That is exactly what was served on Saturday, May 12th at an old fashioned ice-cream social benefiting Angela Emery. Angela, a math teacher at Jupiter High School, is fighting metastactic colorectal cancer.
On Saturday the courtyard at Jupiter High School was filled with live music, a "kids korner" with fun activities, face painting and temporary tattoos, over forty raffle items, balloons and a feeling of community support. Inside the cafeteria student volunteers scooped up ice-cream and toppings and served an array of home baked desserts donated by the staff, culinary department and students of Jupiter High School. The relaxing jazz music was provided by volunteer jazz ensemble students. Friends and community businesses donated items that were raffled off at the end of the day.
Angela, her husband RIck, also a teacher at Jupiter High School and their 3 year-old son Daniel were overwhelmed by the love and support they felt through out the afternoon. Angela commented, "The ice-cream social was more than we ever expected and it means more than we could ever say." Both Angela and Rick spoke about the community coming together when someone is in need. They both had the opportunity to speak with cancer survivors that came to the social to show support and give them hope. The many students, parents and staff who came out touched Angela and her family. "Sometimes as teachers we have no idea what impact we have on our students. Having my students tell me how much we are in their prayers meant so much to me. Their support showed me that I am the teacher that I always hoped to be." The Emery family feels so lucky to live in Jupiter and to be embraced by all the love, support and hope that has been shown.
The event coordinated by staff members of Jupiter High School, parent volunteers and friends raised $24,000 which will be a huge help towards the medical bills incurred by Angela.
For those in the community who may have missed the event but still wish to help, donations may be made to the Angela Emery Benefit Fund at any Bank Atlantic location or mailed to Jupiter High School, attention Charmin Persson, 500 North Military Trail, Jupiter, FL 33458.
R.J. Gators is holding a fund raiser for Angela on Sunday, June 3, 2007 from 11 AM to 10 PM at the Chasewood Plaza Jupiter location. Fifteen percent of your bill on this day will go to the benefit fund. The R.J. Gator's fundraising card to be used on June 3 is available in the Jupiter High School guidance office.
Jupiter High School and the town of Jupiter have truly proven that they are a community of caring people in the out pouring of support they have shown to Angela, Rick and Daniel. As the recent editorial in the Juptier Courier read, "eating ice-cream can help" and the community did just that.
