Couples Shows Love is Forever
Contributed by: Jennifer Martinez on 2/13/2008

George and Jean Sellers are a perfect example of true love persevering through some of life's most trying moments. The couple, who have been together for 62 years, went through a war, double diagnoses of cancer, and Hurricane Katrina, yet still wake up each morning grateful for the life they've shared together.

In 1941, the couple met while attending Georgia Tech. They began a friendship, and though they dated around, they always knew they would end up together. After dating for a year, George surprised Jean by giving her his gold fraternity bracelet, a sign of his ever-lasting love for her. He then left for war, but kept in contact as best he could. When George returned from war, the couple's love was stronger than ever. They picked up where they left off and married in Boston in 1945.

After the wedding, the couple moved back to Atlanta so George could attend graduate school at Georgia Tech. He was soon hired by Sears for their management program, the couple moved to New Orleans, and George spent the next 34 years of his life working for the company. Throughout this time, both George and Jean had bouts with cancer. "The cancer was truly a scary time in our lives," said Jean. "Though we both still have cancer, we have learned to cope and that no matter what life brings our way we are always prepared to fight those battles together."

The majority of the Seller's lives were spent residing in New Orleans. When Hurricane Katrina hit, the Sellers were in New Orleans. They lost just about everything, but with their positive outlook on life they knew they would get through.

Knowing they still needed constant medical attention, but wanting to continue living life to the fullest, the Sellers decided to move to Florida. With the help of one of their sons, they found their current home, the Carlisle Palm Beach in Lantana, Fl., a luxury independent and assisted living community that has given them the opportunity to be surrounded by others who have their zest for life. "Each day we wake up and look at our calendars, said Jean. "We are enjoying our retirement as much as the rest of our lives."
