Vermicompost (also called worm compost) is the end-product of the breakdown of organic matter by some species of earthworm. Vermicompost is a nutrient-rich, natural fertilizer and soil conditioner. The process of producing vermicompost is called vermicomposting.
The earthworm species most often used are Red Wigglers (Lumbricus rubellus). These species are well adapted to the special conditions in vermicompost. Small-scale vermicomposting is well suited to turn green kitchen waste into high-quality soil, where space is limited.
Workshop participants will learn about small-scale vermicomposting. Each participant will be supplied with a vermicomposting "starter kit" which will enable them to begin composting kitchen waste.
Instructors
Ken Gioeli, Natural Resource Agent
Diane Goldberg, Master Gardener
Jacquie Burgess, Waste Reduction Contract Manager
Kate O'Neill, Volunteer Coordinator
Space is limited, so pre-registration is required. Registration deadline and registration fees are due one week prior to the course. Call (772) 462-1660 to sign up for this workshop. The cost is $20 and includes a worm composting starter kit. This kit will include a vermicompost bin, red wigglers, and substrate. Checks only. No cash will be accepted. Make checks payable to the "St Lucie County 4-H Foundation."
