Breast Cancer Survivor Helps the Newly Diagnosed
Contributed by: Jamie Gray on 4/9/2008

Carol Horn, a resident of Boca Raton, Florida, doesn't waste a minute of her life. As a newlywed, mom, and business woman, Carol's optimism and strong will kept her going as she battled breast cancer over a year ago.

As a volunteer for Voices of Mammosite, through business contacts and speaking with women in her community, she wants to direct her energy to helping other women who are newly diagnosed with the disease get the support they need as they face treatment decisions. "As a breast cancer survivor, I feel it is my mission to connect with other women who have this disease and who might be struggling with what to do next."

Carol was lucky. Her breast cancer was found at an early stage and she was able to receive MammoSite® 5-Day Targeted Radiation Therapy and is now free of the disease. She thanks her husband, and all of her close friends, who took her to the hospital for her treatments and helped her out at home. A special thank you goes out to her son who provided her with an iPod so she could listen to music during her treatments and make the time go by quicker.

Carol is eager to spread her message of hope to all the women she comes in contact with. "I believe the right message can save people's lives. I want others to have the luck that I had. I want to spread the word to as many women as I can so they can get through this and move on with their lives.

Voices of MammoSite is a program supported by a website devoted to connecting newly diagnosed breast cancer patients with a network of extraordinary women who have confronted the challenges of the disease-specifically those who have fought it successfully with MammoSite® 5-Day Targeted Radiation Therapy. The procedure is a partial breast irradiation treatment available to patients with early-stage breast cancer that can be completed in less than a week.

The website allows visitors to watch videos of survivors' stories, contact them confidentially to discuss the challenges of breast cancer treatment and recovery and find educational resources and mammogram reminder e-cards. For survivors, it offers the opportunity to participate, speak out and lend their voices and support to the thousands of women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. The site also features educational information and a listing of local and national breast cancer awareness events and activities.
