Oh, My Aching Back!
Contributed by: Jupiter Farms Massage on 7/1/2008

"Oh, My Aching Back!"

The investment firm where my husband works recently moved their offices to a beautiful new space in CityPlace. While excited about his new digs, he has also started complaining more about his neck, back and shoulders aching. While he's thinking about massage and how it will make him feel better, I'm thinking about his body mechanics at work.

So often we work on clients and release their stressed-out muscles...only to have them tighten right back up again. When this happens, we look toward body mechanics. Repetitive motion with poor body mechanics are often the culprit of the pain, and a few simple adjustments may help keep you pain-free.

If you've come home from work or a long drive with an aching neck or back, you are not alone. These are two of the most commonly reported work related injuries due to sitting in an office chair all day, or spend lots of time hunched over your computer! You don't need to do much heavy lifting to suffer from a sore neck or back.

So, what can you do about it?

In many cases, applying sound ergonomic principles and movement will help alleviate your pain and keep you pain-free. Repetitive motion and fatigue are two prime causes of neck & back pain. Sitting for long periods of time (even while driving) affects your muscles. Try taking small breaks...stand up... stretch... short, quick walks throughout the day can help. Stay physically fit and strong. 30 minutes of daily exercise helps...try two 15-minute brisk walks each day.

Pay attention to your computer, desk and chair. If you spend most of the day seated, use an ergonomically correct chair that adjusts for your back and height...and has arm rests. Position the chair so your feet rest flat on the floor. Your keyboard and mouse should be positioned so your arms reach them at a 90-degree angle with your elbows at your sides. Wrists should reach your keyboard on an even plane without bending up or down. Your computer screen should be directly ahead of you (not off to the side) and be elevated slightly so you don't have to bend your neck in order to view it.

Keeping up with regular massage therapy not only helps nurture your muscles by keeping them pliable and pain-free, but also increases circulation, stimulates lymph flow (your body's natural defense system), improves your skin and increases joint flexibility...all working in conjuction to help you stay healthy!
