Russians Are Coming: Russian Medical Massage Gains in Popularity to Treat Fibromyalgia, Lupis, Arthritis, Depression & More
-- In Use for Over 130 Years & Now in South Florida, Rehabilitative Massage Focuses on Central Nervous System and Immune System --

Jupiter, Fla. --When the owner of Jupiter Farms Massage was recently in Costa Rica for an educational conference and training course on Russian Medical Massage, she was expecting yet one more variation of the typical massage that she could offer her clients with which to relax. Boy was she in for a surprise. "The idea of a massage being for relaxation was virtually unheard of in Russia until recent times," said Lisa Koltun, a Licensed Massage Therapist, on what she learned. "The Russian Medical Massage has been scientifically studied for over 130 years and is considered one of the best clinical modalities for the treatment of many illnesses still today." In fact, unless you were an athlete, prior to the 1990s, Russians needed a prescription for a massage, that's how important their techniques were viewed in treating sickness and injuries. Now, after extensive training by a Russian expert, Koltun is beginning to offer Russian Medical Massages to her clients, as are several other massage centers in Palm Beach County. What Koltun's especially excited about is its use in treating disorders like Fibromyalgia, Lupis, MS and depression, since the Russian techniques focus to a large part on re-educating the central nervous system (CNS) and the immune system.

How does the massage work? Specific massage strokes are used to produce corresponding effects in the systems and organs of the body. This touch, or mechanical stimulation, sends message to the CNS, which initiates change and prompts signals for physiological changes in the tissues, systems, and organs. The massage process essentially jumpstarts the stimulation of a chain of nervous-reflex reactions in the body. Both conditioned and unconditioned reflexes re-educate the body into proper function resulting in the reduction of pain, normalization of blood pressure, improvement of the immune system's function, and generation of the healing response. "It re-educates the muscles, tissues and cells, bringing them back into balance," explains Koltun. The technique can also assist with pain, swelling, muscle contraction and reflexes.

According to Zhenya K. White in April's issue of Massage Today regarding the Russian Medical Massage, which she has taught along with physiotherapy for three decades, "Massage therapy continues to be heavily supported by the medical community [in Russia] and plays an important part in almost every physiotherapy treatment protocol for musculoskeletal, neurological, internal, cardiovascular and many other dysfunctions." White says that massage has always been a part of almost every treatment Russians receive during their inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation. The author describes how even infants receive massages to increase blood circulation. Over the past century, massage techniques have been studied in Russia for their effects on everything from nitrogen metabolism in the body to the performance of the lungs, metabolism of fats and more.

Jupiter Farms Massage intent is to primarily use the treatment to re-educate the central nervous system, circulatory system, and immune system (suprarenal gland). Adds Koltun, "The central nervous system should relax and normalize or restore itself with increased adrenalin production due to improved suprarenal function. The increase of arterial flow and the increased production and delivery of serotonin improves circulation."

Effective treatment periods vary but for disorders such as Fibromyalgia, a 30-minute treatment is suggested two times weekly for five weeks to be most effective in re-educating the body back into balance. Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by constant presence of widespread pain in muscles and joints of the body. Other symptoms may include chronic aching, stiff muscles, sleep problems, depression, and digestive problems. It is prevalent in the U. S. mostly in females between 25-50 years of age. With the first Russian Medical Massage treatments, patients should begin to sleep better and have relief from digestive problems.

In addition to being effective for Fibromyalgia, Lupis, MS, Rheumatoid Arthritis and depression, Russian Medical Massage also benefits symptoms of chronic fatigue and is beneficial for acute automobile accidents if treatment begins shortly after the accident. Koltun is aware of at least two other massage centers that have recently begun offering the technique in Palm Beach County, and its acceptance is growing throughout the U.S. as an addendum to regular medical treatments. Seminars on the technique were recently held in Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Russian Medical Massages should be avoided if a person has any of the following conditions: cellulitis, blood infections, a temperature of 101 degrees or higher, or skin or internal infections such as kidney infection.
