JMC LAUNCHES $6 MILLION DATA CENTER PROJECT
Contributed by: Lee Jones on 10/22/2008

Jupiter Medical Center has launched a $6 million technology project to support the hospital's major multi-year growth initiative and clinical quality initiatives that improve patient safety and care.
Construction begins this month on a new 2,400-square-foot data center, a critical component of the infrastructure expansion project currently underway that includes an outpatient center, central energy plant, additional ICU beds, and a Heart and Vascular Center. Expected to be operational in 2009, the data center will be the hospital's hub of hospital operations, serving both clinical and financial systems and increasing medical team access to electronic medical records, patient safety and more.
"Advanced technology systems are critical to providing the highest quality care possible, and are a leading factor in our ongoing efforts to enhance patients' overall experience and outcomes," said Paul Dell Uomo, CEO.
JMC's new project builds on groundwork laid during an earlier $8.5 million technology initiative, begun in 2004, which included a number of technological upgrades and advances including a hospital-wide computerized system, establishing JMC as a digital hospital and industry innovator. Features of the new data center include:

• An advanced patient access, archiving and communication system for digitally storing x-rays, MRIs, CT scans, mammograms and other tests
• Electronic medical records and on-line nurse documentation
• A password-protected physician portal so physicians can access records anytime, anywhere
• Wireless mobile platforms for physicians and nurses to input patient information at the bedside for the most up to date electronic medical records.

• An advanced pharmacy management system that enhances patient safety by checking orders and dispensing medications from a secure cabinet on each hospital floor.

In addition, JMC is implementing prescription bar coding technology to create a seamless and more comprehensive view of patient information, promoting faster, safer and more efficient care.
"As digital applications continue to play a central role in improving how patient care is delivered, healthcare providers require greater availability of data to reduce error rates, risks and costs," Dell Uomo said. "The new data center is the infrastructure we need to put in place to capture these benefits."
A not-for-profit 283-bed community Medical Center consisting of 163 private acute care hospital beds and 120 long-term care beds, Jupiter Medical Center provides a broad range of services, with specialty concentrations in orthopaedics, long-term care, minimally invasive vascular procedures, cancer care and advanced diagnostics. Jupiter Medical Center is affiliated with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and is currently in the midst of a major, multi-year growth plan. The Medical Center has approximately 1,500 employees, 490 physicians and 700 volunteers.
