CHILDREN SAY “BOO” AT JUPITER MEDICAL CENTER
Contributed by: Lee Jones on 11/12/2008

Halloween Treats are Tricky for Kids with Diabetes
The Diabetes Education Department at Jupiter Medical Center in collaboration with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation held its 4th Halloween celebration at the hospital. Halloween can be a challenging time for children with diabetes and the focus of the party was on fun - not candy. The parents celebrated with the 18 children, and networked with other parents and with diabetes education staff for resources.
One of the first things a person with diabetes learns is to avoid foods with lots of sugar. Diabetes affects the body's ability to utilize sugar and, as a result, elevates blood glucose levels. Since most candy is loaded with sugar, parents of children with diabetes may need a few tricks to treat their kids on Halloween.
Children with diabetes can actively enjoy Halloween by planning ahead to fit a treat into their diabetes management plans. But alternative ways to celebrate - like our party - that don't involve candy are also a nice way to participate. The children were entertained with Halloween limbo, Twister, dance freeze, arts and crafts, and musical chairs. The menu included pizza, diet soda, and sugar free cookies. They came dressed as princesses, Draculas, Shreks, lady bug, and Power Rangers. The JMC Diabetes Education staff showed their spirit by dressing in costume as well.
