JUPITER MEDICAL CENTER INTRODUCES 'THROUGH THE MOUTH' WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY AND GASTRIC BANDING SURGERY WITH REALIZE™ BAND

Two innovative new weight loss surgeries are now being performed at Jupiter Medical Center. The surgeries are available to patients of Dr. Jefferson Vaughan, the director of Jupiter Medical Center's Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.

StomaphyX Surgery, which has been recently highlighted in the national news, is a procedure whereby a surgeon uses an endoscope through the mouth to reduce the size of the stomach pouch.

"This is a surgery designed to benefit persons who have regained weight after having traditional gastric bypass surgery." reports Vaughan.

Also new in the area is Dr. Vaughan's use of the REALIZE Adjustable Gastric Band. During the procedure, the adjustable gastric band is placed around the uppermost part of the stomach, dividing it into two parts; a small upper pouch and a lower stomach. The upper pouch can only hold about ½ cup of food. "This means the patient eats less and feels full sooner," said Dr. Vaughan. "This makes it easier to adopt and stick with healthier eating habits." One advantage of the REALIZE™ Adjustable Gastric Band is the REALIZE mySUCCESS™ online support system which reinforces better eating habits, and allows patient and surgeons to share daily progress after the surgery.

"Bariatric Surgery can be life saving for those who have health problems related to obesity, but long-term success requires the patient make a commitment to a new lifestyle," said Dr. Vaughan.

Obesity is becoming more common, a condition that is encouraged by the sedentary work we do combined with today's abundance of foods with a high caloric density.

Those who suffer from obesity related complications such as type II diabetes can overcome this life-threatening disease with bariatric surgery.

Jupiter Medical Center's 10 year weight loss surgery program has earned the recognition of Bariatric Center of Excellence by the Association of American Bariatric Surgeons.

Dr. Vaughan will be giving lectures September 1 st in Port St. Lucie and September 16 th in Jupiter. For more information, call 800-376-4557.
