Thanks to George Kalman, a radio producer and long time friend of the Perry Como family, WJTW 100.3 FM will set the musical stage for the holidays on December 23rd from 3-5 p.m. with the 2008 Perry Como Special.
Kalman, known professionally as Johnny Knox, co-hosted the syndicated Weekend with Perry radio show for over twelve years. The show was either produced in person or by phone. Knox continues to produce a Christmas special every year because the public interest is still there. He made the 2008 Como Christmas Special available to WJTW station owner, Tom Boyhan.
"We're honored to have the opportunity to provide our listeners with this Christmas Special, "said Boyhan. "It's a perfect fit for the WJTW format. We have many of the Como songs on our play list and often get requests from our listeners to play certain selections for special occasions."
Even though Perry Como passed away over seven years ago, the long time resident of Jupiter/Tequesta area remains everyone's favorite crooner. One of the best-known American singers of the past 50 years, Como sold more than 100 million records over a 60-year career, with 27 of his records going gold.
How lucky we are to have the technology to still be able to enjoy his laid back style and melodic baritone voice.
For long time Jupiter/Tequesta residents, we remember Perry dining at the Royal Lion Restaurant, located at the corner of U.S. Highway 1 and Tequesta Drive; or grabbing a cup of coffee at Mrs. Murphy's Donut Shop, under the old Alternate A1A bridge. When the Chamber of Commerce resumed monthly coffee meetings in September each year, Mr. C was the opening act.
But, most of all, we remember him driving his golf cart through the streets of Tequesta as he returned from golfing at Tequesta Country Club. "Mr. Como is well remembered here at the Tequesta Country Club," said Bill Taylor, current President of the club.
The Tequesta Country Club is sponsoring the Perry Como Christmas Special over WJTW FM, 100.3 "He was always such a gentleman and admired by all of the members. It's our pleasure to be able to pay tribute to him this way," said Taylor.
For people interested in listening to the2008 Perry Como Christmas Special but not able to pick the radio signal, go to WJTWFM on line and enjoy!
