A group of Jupiter immigrants who attended eight weeks of adult evening classes to learn English were feted at a graduation ceremony Tuesday, July 3, at El Sol, Jupiter's Neighborhood Resource Center.
Sixty-three persons successfully completed the English as a Second Language Program (ESOL) and fifty-three were on hand to receive their certificates Tuesday. The graduation was the first at El Sol since the English program was accredited recently by the School District of Palm Beach County. Students enrolled in the program attended classes three nights a week.
The students hailed from Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador and other Latin American countries.
"It was a very joyful evening for these students who were so eager to learn the language of their new country. We share in their well-desrved pride for their achievements," said Eileen Harden, who is ESOL coordinator for El Sol. Also participating in the graduation celebration were Ms. Judy Langelier, Special Coordinator and ESOL Support Representative and Ms. Claire Valier, Adult ESOL Coordinatior, both of the School District of Palm Beach County.
The evening English classes are a collaborative effort of El Sol and Corn Maya, a Hispanic outreach organization. Day-time English classes and computer skillls classes are also offered at El Sol where workers are matched with employers to fill jobs. The non-profit El Sol Center opened September 6, 2007 and is open to all Jupiter residents.
Persons interested in hiring workers may call (561) 748-5177.
