Local Resident Accepted Into Federal Academy

Midshipman Cory James Benda, the son of Thomas & Brenda Benda residing at 16030 Mellen Lane in Jupiter Farms, participated on September 15th in Acceptance Day ceremonmies at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY.

The colorful annual even marks the official "acceptance" of the freshman, or plebe, classinto the ranks of the Academy's Regiment of Midshipmen.

A graduate of Jupiter High School, Midshipman Cory James Benda with some 280 other plebes, were administered the Academy oath by Rear Admiral Joseph D. Stewart, the institution's superintendent. The members of the Class of 2011 were aditionally sworn into the U.S. Naval Reserve by Rear Admiral Noel G. Preston, USN, the Deputy Chief of the U.S. Navy Reserve.

Midshipman Benda was nominated to attend the Academy by Congressman Clay Shaw. The plebe class reported to the Academy on July 5th for a two-week indoctrination program. Since then, the Class of 2011 has been involved in academic and regimental education and training.

Benda plays outside linebacker for the football team at the Academy. The Academy is operated by the Maritime Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
