Community Gathers for Loxahatchee River Science Symposium Event
The Loxahatchee River Watershed Science Symposium, a two-day public environmental education workshop held April 30-May 1, hosted a special community reception at the new River Center.
The evening event featured a sneak peak at the interactive exhibits and offerings of the River Center, scheduled to open this summer. There also was a special presentation on the history of the Loxahatchee River given by local historian and author Jim Snyder.
The Loxahatchee River Watershed Science Symposium is a bi-annual two-day seminar sponsored and presented by The Loxahatchee River District, Palm Beach County, South Florida Water Management District, and many other sponsors. Daily presentations include guest speakers, exhibits and discussions on topics such as water quality, aquatic flora and fauna, modeling of the watershed, hurricane impacts, and environmental restoration.
The River Center presents an interactive exploration of the history of the watershed, its diverse wildlife and its majestic environmental value, along with the challenges associated with a growing population. In addition, guests can learn where their water comes from, how it is consumed and recycled back into the community. There are multi-media and live aquatic exhibits, and even a touch tank filled with aquatic life, which make learning about the Loxahatchee River interesting and fun for all ages.
