The Friends of Jupiter Beach are sponsoring amonthly beach cleanup
Saturday,August 2from 8:00am-10:00am.
The sponsor is
F P L,
the traditional August beach cleanup sponsor, which means theirimpressive, energetic FPL volunteer brigade will be on hand for this great day of community service.
Volunteers arrive at 8:00am sharpatthe Anita Lankler Pavilionin Ocean Cay Park, east of US Hwy 1 and Marcinski Road, divide into teams toclean2 1/2 miles of beach, sidewalks, and park grounds--and the Jupiterinlet--then regroup at 9:30 am for light continental breakfast featuring home baked goodsand door prizes. Community service hours are awarded. All volunteers are welcome and advance registration is
not
required. When weather is in doubt, call 748-8140 for a "cancel" message.
Volunteers areencouraged to bring recycledshopping bags for use in cleanup efforts, garden gloves, sunscreen and bug spray. Closed-toe shoes are required.
Since September 2006, Friends of Jupiter Beach have beentracking theweight of garbage and recyclablesremoved from Jupiter Beachat monthly cleanups, for a totalexceeding
12,300pounds of trash removed from September 06-July 08. More than5,000 pounds of recyclableshave beenseparated and transferred voluntarily by Rapid Removal, a Palm Beach Gardens firm.
Previously, the number of garbage bags collected were recorded, but the change was made to so that observers could fully comprehend the extent of the garbage problem at the beach and, more importantly, the tremendous benefit to the community provided by Friends of Jupiter Beach. The offer by Rapid Removal, in fall of 2006, to collect the separated recyclables following each cleanup has resulted in a nearly 50% reduction in the amount of garbage going to landfill.
Friends of Jupiter Beach is a 14-year-old not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 volunteer organization dedicated to organizing monthly beach cleanups, providing free "dog bags" at the beach, and preserving dog-friendly beach privileges through education and community service.
