Coming to this area a little more than a year ago was indeed a bitter-sweet experience for Howard Grady Brown. Brown, whose play "The Lady Swims Today" currently is in rehearsal, had recently lost his father and moved to Port St. Lucie to care for his mother, who was in poor health. Within several months, she died, followed shortly by Brown's wife, Anita (to whom "The Lady" is dedicated).
Clearly as tough as the odd assortment of rough and ready personalities who come alive in "The Lady," Brown easily could have let himself be overcome by grief, sadness and despair. Instead, he decided to move on to produce and direct "The Lady," which will make its South Florida premiere at the Atlantic Theatre in Jupiter from October 2-11.
"The Lady" was produced twice in New York in 2007 and starred Robert Funaro, who played a supporting role in the extraordinarily successful TV series, "The Sopranos." Set in a seedy, run-down motel/bar on the Chesapeake Bay, "The Lady Swims Tonight" is the story of four men who plan to pull off the heist of a lifetime. The play is a drama in the film noir tradition of "Key Largo" and "To Have and Have Not."
Brown will direct a cast of non-professional actors who have appeared in numerous South Florida productions. Brown himself has written more than 20 plays, directed a score of others and has published a book of poetry. He holds an MFA in directing from Stanford University and has had his work showcased on television.
Despite a spate of personal losses, Brown remains upbeat and enthusiastic about this unique play, and looks forward to its premiere performance on the Treasure Coast.
"The Lady Swims Today" will be performed at the Atlantic Theatre, 6743 W. Indiantown Rd., Jupiter at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2, 3, 9 and 10, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4 and 11. Tickets online at www.theatlantictheater.com or call (561) 575-4942.
