Contributed by: River Center on 10/15/2009

On Saturday, October 3rd, the River Center hosted over 115 local Girl Scouts for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Eco Action Interest Project Patch Workshop. This event was held to promote young girls' awareness of women in science and technology fields as well as to encourage interest in the girls to pursue careers in the science, math, engineering, and technology fields.
The girls rotated between five different stations, each focusing on an important aspect of our environment and the technology and science used in that field. At the "Think Outside the Box' station the scouts collaborated to find unique solutions to many of today's major environmental issues. The Hydro Lab allowed the girls to use current field technology to measure important water quality factors such as salinity and clarity."How We Get Water" introduced the scouts tothe technology used to obtain and filter drinking water and treat and recycle used waste water. The Women in Science Career Fair allowed the scouts to interact in small groups with women who work in different science, technology, engineering, and environmental fields. Each troop also participated in the River Center Garden Service Project where they learned the importance of and to identify Florida native plants and worked to beautify and maintain the River Center's Migratory Bird Garden.
