The recent vote by the Jupiter Town Council-especially at a time for 'belt-tightening' was quite telling. They unanimously voted to designate themselves by the new title-"Employee." They made this designation effective retroactive to January 1, 2007 a year and half prior to the vote.
They fully intend to garner all extra benefits that a hired person partakes, such as health insurance, dental insurance, retirement contributions (paid by the town), and various monetary allowances, etc. What that shows is that they intend to 'tap the coffers' in order to get the same employee benefits that are provided to employed staff members.
Please look at the difference:
Public Officials: The Jupiter Town Council is an elected group of people. They are entrusted to devote their service for the benefit, support, and best interests of the citizens. They have particular authority to transact appropriate duties at various intervals, and are given a monetary compensation or reimbursement.
Government Employees: Persons who are hired. Their loyalty is applying their efforts for the benefit, support, and best interests of the government. They have a duty to provide services to a government entity on a regular basis in exchange for a wage.
Let us break it down:
Public Officials
Elected
Devoted to Citizens
Perform duties at various intervals
Given compensation
Government Employees
Hired
Loyalty to Government
Labor on a regular basis
Paid a wage
What our wayward leaders are missing here is that their positions are not intended to be an occupation, and serving as a Town Councilor is not a career! They need to be reminded of that and rescind their decision.
