I was given a unique opportunity this summer to do an internship with County Commissioner Shelley Vana. Since I am hoping to go into politics, this seemed a good time to learn about the county realm of politics from someone with day-to-day experience. I learned so many different things it is almost difficult to know where to begin.
First of all, I realized that I did not know much is the county's responsibility. The county isn't just in charge of schools and roads. They are responsible for the lifeguards that protect the people that go to our great beaches. The county also has multiple parks throughout the county. The county is responsible for the police force in many unincorporated and incorporated parts of the county. I never learned how many problems and how much work hurricanes cause. The commissioner's office must be ready to contact many areas in their district if a hurricane looming on South Florida
Secondly, I learned that there are many people in the county that do want their voice heard. I always thought the people of this country were not involved in politics and very apathetic about everything that is going on. I can tell you that this statement does not apply to the people of this county. There were many people that called to speak to the commissioner to have their voice heard. In addition, people also used regular mail and email to tell Commissioner Vana how they felt about current issues. For example, many people expressed their fear of the county taking away the lifeguards because of budget problems. I can tell you that the county is not taking away the lifeguards on our shores any time soon.
Finally, I never realized how much the county personnel did to prepare for everything that they would discuss. There were agenda meetings to make sure everyone was clear about what would be discussed and numerous calls or memos to finalize the meeting plans. I never thought so much planning was put into the process, but I feel this is very important. I feel that it is important in every branch of government for politicians to know what is going on, this way there are no mistakes done in the process.
I learned a lot more on this internship then said and it was really worthwhile. It really opened my eyes to much of the activities that occur at any political office.
