Rendina Family Foundation Holds 2nd Annual "Raising the B.A.R." Golf Tournament; Donates $500,000 to Massachusetts General Hospital
JUPITER, FL, May 28, 2008 - The Rendina Family Foundation, founded by the late Jupiter-based developer Bruce A. Rendina and his wife Marji, recently held its second annual "Raising the B.A.R." Bruce A. Rendina Memorial Golf Tournament at the
One&Only Ocean Club Golf Course in Paradise Island, Bahamas. At the event, the Foundation presented a check of $500,000 to Massachusetts General Hospital's Brain Tumor Research Center, the proceeds from this year's event and an additional contribution.
In addition to the golf outing, highlights from this year's tournament included a Friday evening Welcome Party and the Saturday Awards Dinner with entertainment from Chris McCarty both held at the Atlantis Resort. Nearly 200 guests were in attendance to support the Foundation's missions.
Lehman Brothers was the "Raising the B.A.R." Sponsor and Birdie Sponsors included Andrew Malik and Elizabeth Smith Malik; BDI Capital Management, LLC; Fred Klipsch, Fred Farrar and George Chapman; and Massachusetts General Hospital.
Bruce A. Rendina, along with wife Marji, created the Rendina Family Foundation in 1997. One of the missions of the Foundation has become "To enhance the quality of life for families and individuals who have been affected by cancer. We endeavor to accomplish this through the funding of organizations, hospitals and biotechnology companies that excel in researching and developing cures for cancer." Since its inception, the Rendina Family Foundation has donated more than $4 million to organizations nationwide.
Throughout his lifetime Bruce A. Rendina made it a priority to lend a helping hand to others in their pursuit of health and happiness. His vibrant, entrepreneurial spirit and his caring attitude for others will forever be embedded in our hearts and in those whose lives he touched.
On August 8, 2005, Bruce's neurologists Drs. Carl Sadowsky and Walter Martinez, who ironically occupied the first medical office building Bruce developed as an independent developer, diagnosed Bruce with glioblastoma multiforme or GBM. GBM is the most common and aggressive type of primary malignant brain tumor, accounting for 52% of all primary malignant brain tumor cases and 20% of all malignant intracranial tumors. Understanding the serious natures of his illness, the median survival time from the time of diagnosis without any treatment being three months, Bruce scheduled his surgery immediately. Four days later on August 12, 2005 Bruce underwent his first surgery at Boston Massachusetts General Hospital. The surgery was deemed a success, extending his prognosis six to eight months.
Yet, after six months on the trial drug, it became evident that Bruce needed another surgery, which he had on November 4, 2006 back at Boston Massachusetts General Hospital. His body weakened, the physical battle for Bruce was tougher than ever. A fighter until the end, ultimately the battle lost and Bruce passed on December 13, 2006.
Bruce A. Rendina, as Chairman, CEO and President of Rendina Companies, helped shape the national landscape of healthcare real estate by partnering with hospitals and physicians to develop medical facilities. He structured, developed and negotiated more than five million square feet of transactions in 30 states, valued in excess of $4 billion. He also founded Paramount Real Estate Services, a property management company responsible for managing more than five million square feet of medical office space nationwide. Rendina was also responsible for two large-scale development projects in Palm Beach County, Florida; the Waterfront Clematis buildings in downtown West Palm Beach, which contributed to the re-vitalization of the downtown corridor; and the Abacoa Planned Community Development in Jupiter, a 2,055-acre, master planned mixed use community.
